Episode 200: I am an antiFascist creator! Definition below.

A fore note: Today Tuesday 9/23/25, I will be guest co-host on my friend Steve Haggard’s radio show, The Haggard & Haggard Radio Hour, at 4 PM CDT on RadioFreeNashville.org. We’ll chat a bit about music and especially my choices for today, two from a very inspiring artist, Jimmie Spheeris and hear some Pacific Reggae from the Herbs of New Zealand, “the land down under the land down under”. Tune in! As Steve says, “and some meaningless banter.” But you already know that.

Hello again and a big hi to you all. There’s a tradition here at TVT to try not to repeat any tunes. Unsuccessful I’ve been but if I do repeat, there’s a high quality put on a number. That’s why we start out with two from Traffic’s John Barleycorn Must Die LP. It is a very cool musical masterpiece. And you’ll also hear Link Wray, Tracy Nelson, John Kongos and more. The ever-so-popular JIMJAM today is CSNY’s Teach Your Children, soon, so get ready for TVT!

And thanks for listening today.  My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com.  If you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org, we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime.

Episode 199: Fall Faves, Salute to Mark Volman

Here’s another Tales Vinyl Tells for ya.  High, hello and welcome back to more of that great album rock of the 60s & 70s along with (sometimes) tunes on either sides of those decades. It’s almost fall here in middle Tennessee and Nashville.  Summer is winding down and it’s been one hot mothuh, and not in a good way.  The dogwoods have put out their little green pods which have grown into bigger red pods, and the season will change soon.  It’s on the way.  Today’s hour includes some songs about fall and there’s also my statement about the mess in these United States with a lying evil fascist in our White House.  They bricked over the Rose Garden and there’s so much gaudy fake gold nugget accents in the Oval they should offer barf bags at the door.  No more spray paint, ok??  And he wants a Nobel Prize and wants to name the Beloved Kennedy Center after himself or her.  What a flabby gas bag.  I can’t stand this guy, the Russian asset, ruining not running the US.  He’s the Master of Disaster, the dark lord (thinks he’s God, more like the antiChrist).  The first set goes out to Capt Bonespurs.  That’s my rant for today.  Mark Volman of the Turtles has entered the room next door, we remember him. and I’ve got a new one from Neil Young in this first set.  You’ll like this one! Now Let’s play some great Tales that Vinyls Tell. I’m Brian Hallgren.  Let’s spin some!

Episode 85: Macon and Capricorn Records, Tommy Talton salute and Who'll Stop the Rain JimJam

Today’s show is a replay from February 2024, bringing some of the great album rock of the 60s and 70s right to your ears and to your mind. I'm a child of the 60s and I just love this music. It brings me back to sense excitement. The smells, the tastes, the feelings of joy, bliss and of course, some sadness as some of our friends and acquaintances didn't survive those times. My intention this hour and every hour of Tales Vinyl Tells is to lift you up. This hour you'll hear a band with Yes members that absolutely kills it. There's Cold Blood with Lydia Pence and salutes to Tommy Talton of Cowboy and Gregg Allman Band, adding some ear-joy from Melanie Safka who also entered the room next door recently. Episode 126: Chris Hillman Salute! He's been a major player in rock and country/rock

At the turntables today with some of that great album rock from the 60s & 70s. Those sweet vinyls can still sound as good today as they did 50+ years ago. Pardon the ashes and candlewax. But there aren't any greasy fingerprints because we hold them by the edge, with the edge in the palms of our hands. And there's really not any candlewax or ashes on them. They are sacred. I hope today you'll be delighted when we hear two from the Beau Brummels, a bit of the history of Chris Hillman with his many bands and all we can fit into this hour, including another new segment, the Jim Jam, later today. We'll play Lady Jane by the Stones together. I'm glad you're listening and hope you're digging the Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 8: Have you ever seen the firefall in Yosemite or been in the Hall of the mountain king?

This is a replay of a very early show that ran on RadioFreeNashville in 2023, though it was about the 45th or so overall. And I say hello to you and wonder how you’re doing in this crazy time? I’m taking care, staying well and being nice. This heat is ridiculous. I know that fall will do just that and soon. One antidote is digging some cool tunes from the 60s and 70s and this one has Quicksilver Messenger Service, Firefall, SRC and a big dose from SuperSession with Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills and the totally creative Al Kooper. Great tune from them. I’m glad that you’re here planning on listening to this episode and I’d really like to know where you are. My email is TalesVinylTells@gmail.com.

Episode 150: Finding The Good Stuff Of Growing Up Near The Ocean

What are the good memories of your childhood? What music soothed you or really turned you on?
For me, the ocean was 10 minutes away by car. 20 on bike. The aroma of the salt sea is evident hours away. It was soothing to see the calm flat blue, like glass. It was also exciting to see the ocean when it was full of waves. Summertime in South Florida was hot, hazy and humid, but the effects nature offered on the sea surface and the fun on the hot sand in one’s youth made meaningful memories. Some of the songs of summer are right here and they are not what you might expect.
Tales Vinyl Tells is in our 4th year of bringing some of those great album tracks of the 60s & 70s to you and thrown into the mix are some others that just need to be added to the recipe for a eargasmic hour.

Episode 97: Gershwin Prize winner

And the Gershwin Prize goes to …….The aging process on humans is real. What we do and dont do may play a big part in how that process affects us or not. The vinyl LPs of that era and the new ones being purchased today will last a lot longer than the color in our hair or our smooth and youthful skin. All Im saying is that the age of rock is so wide and varied, from Elvis to Zappa, we have a lot of ground to cover in these short one-hour shows. And, who knows, maybe listening to the music of our youth may give a moment in time when we can enjoy those times or not. Admit it, it wasnt all bad. If you have some input, like my friend, Puh-mella did, let me know your taste in music, who/what/when. Email all your comments to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. Episode 105: Happy Independence Day! It's the 4th of July TVT!

Here’s a salute to America with Yes, Steppenwolf, Karla Bonoff, Linda Ronstadt with one of Bonoff’s tunes and an encouragement to be registered to vote and to be aware of ballot issues everytime the polls are open. Vote with your head and heart. I also encourage you to even consider working the polls, getting involved in letter writing (it’s easy!) There is voting going on much of the time and some don’t want “you people” to know about it. Be informed! Check with your local election board or commission. I know you might think this is early but we’ve got another very important election coming up in 2026 and if we, the people, want change so we can look forward and not backward, we need to vote and get others to vote. There! I said it. Enjoy this episode!

Episode 147: Juneteenth Special

Here it is again. My annual salute to the celebration of the end of slavery on June 19, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free even though the emancipation proclamation had formally freed them almost 2-1/2 years earlier. This was a very significant event but was replaced by Jim Crow laws that still today hamstring the lives of many previous slaves’ families. My hopes are that when you hear The Negro National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, you’ll feel something inside reminding you of the concept of freedom and justice for all.

Episode 118: Indian Summer, RIP Rudolph, Petty/Campbell Now And Then, Health Workers Salute

Didn’t get no notice from Spot-to-fy since last time I posted. Maybe they were just being sensitive and not getting any attention. Whatever. We’ll see what happens this week and see if I can care any less.

This time we salute all health care workers and providers, including those on what some call “the fringes”, complementary medicine, like osteopathy, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, reflexology and reiki, from here.

As we’ve been doing the past couple episodes, we hearing artists before and after larger success. Tom Petty/Heartbreakers/Mike Campbell share 3. This time of year we know winter’s coming and it’s nice to get some warmth to light our fire to prep for cold weather. It’s Indian summer. Nice tunes named that.

Episode 162: Saluting Kristofferson, Lesh, Sergio, John David

The hourglass is filling with sand. I’ve been working on this one over the past couple weeks and got the word that Phil Lesh passed, I knew that I needed to finish up and get the salutes ready. These four had unique lives and affected millions around the world, like many of the artists from the 60s & 70s did. This hour is a major tease. Do you have a story or memory of any of these artists that you might want to share? A Dead concert maybe? Or some piece of trivia? My email is TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. In case you’ve let it slip your mind, you can hear the initial radio show Wednesdays at 5 PM central time on RadioFreeNashville.org or on an actual radio at 103.7 in Nashville. Cale, one from the Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow, the  Kinks, Joe Walsh, the Dukes of September and if we have the time we’re gonna slip one in from Stevie Wonder. If you’re listening on the radio or online but not in podcast form you might want to check the Podcasts out because they contain usually more music and messages that you want to hear. Or not. Regardless, these are the stories that songwriters and artist wanted to tell you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 190: What should I name this one?

I hope I caught you at a good time. After all, this is a program about the great album cuts of the 60s and 70s. This is Tales Vinyl Tells and I am Brian Hallgren. Today we continue to feature a lot of the songs from the year 1969, in particular. These cuts may not be what you expect to hear from the album and we’ll hear from the Kinks, The Mothers of Invention, Simon and Garfunkel and more this time. I’m glad you’re here and I hope you’ll stay with me for this hour of some of the greatest music ever recorded.
